A Medical Con Artist
Original Air Date: April 28, 2008
In the early 1900s, before the American Medical Association began regulating medical procedures, many con artists looking to make a buck performed outrageous procedures and sold faux treatments. One such infamous man was John Brinkley, the subject of author Pope Brock's book Charlatan: America's Most Dangerous Huckster, the Man Who Pursued Him, and the Age of Flimflam. Dr. Oz talks with Pope about the dangerous procedures Brinkley performed, including surgically transplanting goat testicles into impotent men and hawking bogus medical diagnoses and treatments to people through his large-scale, state-of-the-art radio station. Plus, Pope talks about Brinkley's influence on modern-day infomercials and radio and about his fall from fame in the '30s. Related Resources
