Dogs, Humor and Healing
Original Air Date: April 22, 2008
Therapy dogs not only can help people emotionally and socially, they also can help people become physically healthier and live longer, says David Frei, president of Angel On A Leash therapy dog program. Dr. Oz talks with David and Greer Griffith, who directs the program, about how Angel On A Leash is helping people in healthcare centers, schools, correctional facilities and more. Plus, David and Greer talk about the role therapy dogs have had in improving the lives of children at the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where the program began as a charitable activity for the Westminster Kennel Club. Then, Dr. Oz talks with Dr. John D. Kelly IV about the role of humor in healing. An associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Temple University, Dr. Kelly talks about how comedy and mindfulness techniques such as meditation can boost doctor-patient relationships and improve the quality of care doctors are able to offer. "If you want to be a healer, you've got to have a sense of humor," he says. "And if you want to stay [in] this journey of medicine for as long as possible, you've got to lighten up, folks!"
