Taking Care of War Veterans
Original Air Date: March 12, 2008
Whether you are Democrat or a Republican, Iraq war veteran Paul Rieckhoff says the mental, physical and socioeconomic challenges of war veterans should be of concern to every American. Dr. Oz talks with Paul about his organization, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. Paul also talks about his experiences as a solider and war veteran, which he documents in his book, Chasing Ghosts: Failures and Facades in Iraq: A Soldier's Perspective. Plus, Dr. Oz welcomes Colonel Charles Hoge, director of psychiatry and neuroscience at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. They discuss Dr. Hoge's work on a recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine that found that soldiers suffering from mild traumatic brain injuries or concussions in combat may also be more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
