 The Candyman Can!

In honor of Halloween, Gayle talks to Steve Almond, a self-proclaimed candy freak! Steve says that for as far back as he can remember, he has been obsessed with candy. Steve talks to Gayle about his love for all things sweet, his favorite holiday of the year, and about his book, Candyfreak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America.Steve says his passion for candy developed at a very early age. "As I thought about my life and took stock…I asked myself, 'What can I say that is definitively true of me as a person on earth?' and the only thing I could say, definitively, is every single day I've had at least one—and probably up to 101—pieces of candy." Steve tells Gayle that his mother tried to curb the addiction. "She was there but more or less helpless to corral my obsession," Steve says. "She tried, but when you're really a candy freak, you get wiley." Steve says he would do anything to get his hands on sweets as a child. "You just are aware of the candy landscape and you make sure that you're going to get your fix every day. It's like any kind of saga of addiction: You're pretty much living for that next fix." These days, Steve says he has anywhere from three to seven pounds of candy in the house at any given time. He doesn't discriminate on the type of candy, although he says chocolate is "the gold standard." Common candies in his house include chocolate, hard candy, saltwater taffies and caramels. Despite his love of candy, Steve says he's neither overweight nor have his teeth fallen out, though he admits to having "cavities on cavities." His teeth "are primarily silver alloy at this point," he jokes. "I've got a little bling in my mouth." Steve also talks to Gayle about his favorite holiday of the year. "Think about it: On this day you just basically walk around your neighborhood and ask strangers for candy and they are obligated to give it to you." Related Resources
