Diet and Nutrition How we fuel our bodies is not only a matter of maintaining a healthy weight it contributes to our overall well-being. Here are some of the nutritional pitfalls that may be affecting your health. Mistake: Not Eating Enough Folate Folate, a B vitamin also known as folic acid, is something that all of us need in our diet. Pregnant women often know about folate since doctors recommend they get 400 micrograms of folate a day in order to prevent birth defects. Folate has also been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, colorectal cancer and stroke. Remedy: Stock up on folate-rich foods like fortified cereals and breads, green leafy vegetables, orange juice, lentils, nuts and seeds. Mistake: Not Drinking Enough Water 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. It can cause fatigue, high blood pressure, even headaches! Remedy: Keep water everywhere so you can drink your necessary amount. For the average American woman, 5'3" and 140lbs, should be drinking 8 to 10 eight ounce glasses of water a day. The way to monitor it is to check the color of urine. If it's the color of light lemon juice, you're OK. If it's darker than that, you should be drinking more. Mistake: Drinking Your Calories A 20 ounce fruit smoothie could contain as much as 500 calories! And many fruit drinks are only nutrient-free sugar water. If you drink an extra soda every day for a year, you'll gain 15 pounds! Remedy: If you're watching your weight, stick to water, and avoid the liquid calorie traps.
