Carb Addicts' Follow-Up
The Oprah Winfrey Show

OprahToday's the day! We're finding out how Oprah and members of our audience did on the program that became all the rage a month ago — the Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program.

For 42 out of 57 audience members, it worked wonders. They lost a total of 569 pounds! For the other 15... well, they gained a total of 23 pounds. If your results are similar, you're not alone.

Oprah says that while her cravings stopped, she feels deprived, tired and irritable. Other audience members say they experienced carb withdrawal, constipation, and yo-yo diet effects on their metabolisms. In response, the Hellers say the program can and should be altered for individual progress. "That's why there are options in the book to modify the program," Rachael says.

Dr. Christine Northrup, author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, suggests fighting carb withdrawal by slowly weaning yourself from them. Make the switch from white rice to brown, or from white bread to whole grain in order to slowly reduce your carb levels. Also, if you're still eating large quantities of carbs at meals, look for hidden triggers. The need for large amounts of food is something that should dissipate within the first week.

groupThere's plenty of success to celebrate, however. Carol and her daughter Brenda lost a total of 36 pounds! Audience members Linda and Holly bonded over their mutual carb cravings at our first show, and now go grocery shopping together. They've lost 36 pounds! Christina and her husband Roger have lost 23 pounds! Roger says he's never felt better — he's now their family's shopper and chef.

Everyone agrees the program taught them a lot about triggers and cravings. Oprah says that while she only lost four pounds, she's "learned a lot about my own body...that's a wonderful lesson." For her, the experience is proof that "you can't look outside yourself for answers, you've got to look within."

Follow Ups On Well-Remembered Guests
TeriTeri was fairly skeptical about the Lifespan Program during the first show in October. She felt downright "drugged" after eating carbs. The last time we saw Teri, she'd lost seven pounds. Since then she's kicked her carb habit and lost 19 and a half pounds - down two dress sizes and no longer suffering as much back pain.

KellyKelly's been with us since the first food addiction show with Gary Zukav. Last time we saw her she'd lost ten pounds and shared how she learned to change a "cookie attack into a reward meal." Kelly hasn't weighed herself, but her clothes have become looser. We weighed her before the show and she's lost 16 pounds! Kelly says she has begun exercising and learning new ways of cooking.

TwinkaRemember Twinka? She was the carb addict who had to remind herself to eat lunch after she started the plan! She's lost nine pounds and feels her life has been given back to her. "I'm not passing out after meals anymore", says Twinka. Her energy has skyrocketed over the past month and she's committed to doing the program the rest of her life.
