Passing
On a Legacy of Saving Lives
"It's
important to remember the people who came before us."
Growing up in Alabama, Dr. David Satcher's family had little access
to health care. At two, he developed whooping cough and says a miracle
saved his life, inspiring him to become a doctor. That miracle was
a rural Black doctor Dr. Jackson. Dr. Jackson took the time
to show the family had to care and tend for David.
"At age six, I told everyone I was going to be a doctor and make
a difference."
With little access to anything, David Satcher became a doctor because
of his family's spirituality and belief in education.
Dr. Satcher says Dr. Jackson's spirit continues in him along with
the responsibility to reach out to those who need him most.
