What inspired you to create such committed characters?
Dear Ken Follett,
The Pillars of the Earth is my favorite book of all time, hands down. I have loved it since I picked it off the bookstore shelf at age 15. I've read and re-read it multiple times and recommended it more times than I can count. I am so thrilled and excited that it has been selected an Oprah's Book Club book. Thank you!
In today's society of job changes, relocation and divorce, where did you look for inspiration in creating characters who were willing to commit to the creation of a cathedral?
— Laurie S.
Dear Laurie,
I know what you mean. Nowadays, it's hard to imagine someone settling down to do an idealistic job that may take a whole lifetime and still not be finished. But wait a minute. What about Nelson Mandela? Or the thousands of dedicated schoolteachers, charity fundraisers, international aid workers… Come to think of it, there are still plenty of heroes!
