Inside Q&A

Q&A WITH KEN FOLLETT
Was Kingsbridge based on a real-life cathedral?
Dear Ken Follett,

Was there a particular church that you drew from to write this book? After I finished this one, I happened to be in St. Paul/Minneapolis area and was telling my brother, who builds homes for a living, about the book. He took me to a church there, and it was an incredible sight to see. And that was just the outside!

— Pamela E.

Dear Pamela,

I visited many cathedrals before and during the writing of Pillars. The book is not based on any one, though I did have Wells in mind in the early stages, and then Salisbury toward the end, when the final building takes its shape and style. But what I think about most, when I look at a medieval church, is the people who built it.
