Q: I started losing my hair when I was 21 or 22. My hair is now super thin, my part is increasing in size and my ponytail is almost nonexistent. I have to perm what's left to get any body out of my hair. I have been to three different doctors and no one has been of any help. I've had my hand patted and been lectured and been disregarded but no one can help.

A: If your shower drain has more hair than a Metallica concert, it could be a sign of any number of things (we lose hair especially fast if dihydrotestosterone surround and poison the hair follicle). The major reasons that clumps of hair start falling out are anemia (low blood count), stress, especially the stress of recent surgery, menopause, pregnancy, thyroid disease and polycystic ovarian disease. In women, the symptom is often a strong sign that you should have a battery of tests to evaluate your health and need to change something to moderate your stress.
