Q: Why are some belly buttons "innies" and some "outies?"
A: When the doctor cuts your umbilical cord at birth, a scar can form which pushes up the belly button. Occasionally, a small hernia (hole in the leather-like lining called the fascia) can be found and these have a small risk of letting bowel push through. This is particularly found in pregnant women since the baby stretches the belly button hole larger. These bulges usually go away after the delivery and often will not be a problem unless the mother puts on lots of weight. |
