Q: I was listening to one of the radio stations in Detroit this morning and I heard Dr. Roizen say that miscarriages are caused because women do not floss. How can that be true?

A: Maybe you heard me incorrectly, or maybe the radio edited what I said. As I remember in response to a question from the host, I said: "The leading preventable cause of miscarriage appears to be gum disease—that is periodontal disease. And flossing and seeing a dental professional can prevent that. So yes flossing can prevent some miscarriages." As of now, of 100 miscarriages after 2 weeks of implantation, maybe as many as 35 percent not intentionally induced are due to periodontal disease. That data is now being used to help prevent periodontal disease, and prevent miscarriage.
