Q. What about pecans? Are they as good for you if they're roasted and spiced?

A. Nuts are like grandmothers: They've all got some good in them. That's not, of course, to say that all grandmothers are nuts. But if you want to compare, then look at how they stack up: Pecans have 0.4 grams of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids per ounce; meanwhile an ounce of walnuts have 2.5 grams. If you roast the pecans in their own fats (instead of saturated or trans fats), then they'll be just fine. But if you coat them with sugar or high-fructose corn syrup you might as well be eating a bowl of Trix cereal. And, since nothing good can come of that, that's really nuts.
