THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION

Mind-body connection The idea that the mind affects the body is rooted in ancient healing practices from the East. In Western medicine, however, scientific discoveries in the 16th and 17th centuries of things such as bacteria and later antibiotics led physicians to discount the role of the mind on health and shifted the emphasis toward science and technology—the so called "disease-based" model of medicine.

But scientific research in the 20th century provided new evidence for the relationship between mind and health. Today, physicians readily recognize that both the disease-based model and the mind-body model are important in treating patients. We now know that meditation, relaxation and hypnosis can promote overall health and help us manage health problems.

In fact, research has shown that psychological factors can play a large role in both the development and progression of conditions such as cardiovascular disease. We also know that emotional states—chronic stress or a pessimistic outlook—can influence a person's susceptibility to infection.
