Rodney Yee's Yoga
Although Rodney demonstrated a series of basic postures of Hatha yoga during his appearance on The Oprah Show, his training is in a form of Hatha yoga called Iyengar yoga — a very detail-oriented strain of Hatha yoga. The distinctive feature of Iyengar yoga is the emphasis on body alignment and the use of props to reach proper poses. When the poses are performed in proper alignment, they can be sustained for longer periods of time. Rodney says that the participant of Iyengar yoga must be mindful of postures and breathing — which gives them an in-body experience. He stresses that Iyengar yoga isn't about contortionism, but actually the opposite — going back to the natural functions of the body.

What Type of Yoga is Best for You?
Rodney encourages everyone to shop around for different styles. If you don't like a certain style, keep trying. He also stresses that the teacher is often more important than the style, as there's strong variety within each school, even within the strictest styles. Whether you practice yoga in a class or with a video depends on your preferences and lifestyle. Any combination of class and video is helpful — the more often you can practice yoga, the better. It is ideal to practice everyday, although you don't have to do the same yoga routine everyday. In fact, Rodney says the beauty of yoga is that there is a type of practice for every mood.

A Workout for the Mind
The type of meditation that Rodney practices is called Vipassana meditation, which comes straight from the Buddha. There are many Vipassana meditation centers around the country, in which you sit and scan the body, making it similar to yoga in a sense. You use your mind to observe the body, so that the body becomes the object of concentration. You move into the subtleties of observing the breath and then the subtleties of observing the mind.

Yoga During Pregnancy
If you're pregnant, you should find a qualified instructor and check with your doctor before jumping into yoga. To find out who's qualified, both Yoga Journal and Yoga International offer lists of qualified instructors.

When you're pregnant, the body changes drastically. Yoga can create support and provide nurturing. It can also offer a sense of community to a group of pregnant women who get together and talk about their experience. During pregnancy, yoga asks us to listen to how the body is changing, and respond.

Be assertive and know your limits — be on the conservative side.
Don't do twists or any abdominal work.
Don't do anything that evokes any type of fear.
Tell your instructor you're pregnant — it's difficult to tell in the early months.
Find a new instructor if yours isn't catering to your pregnancy.
