Omag Icon My Hair Is Falling Out—Can Diet Help?

Dear Dr. Katz:
For the past six years my hair has been falling out in large clumps. Changing shampoos and conditioners has little effect, and while Rogaine helped, it gave me bad headaches. Is there anything I can add to my diet?

Response:
Nutrition can affect hair growth, since the follicles house active cells that need to be well-nourished to function properly. The two most important factors are high quality protein (such as fish, tofu and legumes) and adequate caloric intake. Healthy hair also depends on a number of micronutrients, including vitamins A, C, and B complex and zinc. Make sure you're eating a balanced diet, with plenty of fruits, veggies and whole grains, complemented with protein, and take a multivitamin for insurance.

In your case, however, nutrition is probably not the culprit. If Rogaine worked, it suggests that your hair loss is hormone related. But because it could also be caused by a more serious health problem, talk to your physician. He or she can determine whether a visit to a specialist might be in order.
